Hi there,
My husband and I want to start a hot shot business in edmonton. Does anyone have any information that will help us get going. I was offered info. but it was for the states. What does a person need…licences, trucks…help please
Hopefully you have a good business plan and have done your research as far as demographics and market saturation. Having been in business for many years I have used the services of hot shots many times and know that there are lots of them in business.
Other than the obvious need for a truck you will need a lot of licenses, etc.
The first thing you might want to do is check out this website:

Here is the form for your Edmonton Home based business license:

Here is your Edmonton Business License application:

Registering your business with the CRA

Your WCB registration and website:

You’ll need to have commercial insurance for your truck but if you’re using it for work you absolutely have to have commercial. Make sure that your driver’s license can handle that type of truck you’re getting.
All your licenses and registrations will come out to approx. $1000. excluding your insurance.
Here is the Canadian website for starting your own business which has lots of useful information.

Starting your own business actually involves a lot of work – tons and tons of filling out forms. The licenses alone will get you let alone all the stuff cra wants. I just recently helped my son launch his own business in Edmonton so I know exactly how much work is involved in this. You would think it’s a simple thing – just pick and deliver goods – well unfortunately it really isn’t. Be prepared for a least 2 hours just getting your home based business license from the city.
Hopefully these will give you some idea of what you’re up against but it will all be worth it in the end.
Good Luck.
